it's flipping hot. to appease our new heat overlords, i made some cold soups for us to eat over the next few days. operation gazpacho was a blazing success, so here's an attempt to transcribe the recipe, since i think it's the best iteration i've made yet.

6:45 pm - i ride my bike i roller skate don't drive no car
|
so r got me a bike for my birthday some months ago. it's this one: http://www.rei.com/product/717377, which is great for me for so many reasons. i was having some trouble riding my bike much, as my arms were going numb about 10 minutes into the ride. not so much with the fun and the wind in your hair when you have to stop every 10 minutes. after some studious ignoring of the problem, off i went to bastyr, where they diagnosed me with thoracic outlet syndrome, subjected me to some physical therapy torture and massage, and prescribed stretches, yoga, and meditation.
some pt and yoga under my belt, i was ready to try riding again, and i took my longest bike ride ever (!) on saturday, all the way to georgetown for artopia. 8 miles! my arms went numb right at the end of the ride, like an hour in. i am slow like molasses and say no thank you to hills for now, but boy riding bikes is fun.
today we went for a short bike ride after work and i practiced my BIKE TRICKS.
- not falling down (40 minutes) - ringing the bell (1 second) - standing up (5 seconds) - no hands (3 seconds)
look out BMXers, hooo doggies!

so i've been making costumes again for manifold motion, having a slight nervous breakdown or two, but mostly just busting ass through the construction of 6 costumes for this showcase. i hadn't put them on the ladies at all until last night, which was tech rehearsal, and i had to hold my breath a little as they put them on. no major catastrophes, everything looks good, i'm happy with the results, and i'll be working on some more pieces to add today.
this is for me to remember later instead of remembering my (totally self-induced) stress level -- overheard from one of the dancers later in the evening: "they're just so comfortable, and dancer-friendly, but still like a costume. i don't think i've danced in anything so stylish before."
pictures will of course be forthcoming after the shows for those of you who are out of town. seattle friends, come see the show! there is trapeze! and amazing dancers! and video installation! and even some snacks! here's the ticket link if you need a nudge.

10:01 am - happy caucus day!
|
dear cascadians,
here is your friendly reminder to get your caucus out and caucus it up today for the democrats. as you may or may not know, the washington state democrats will choose their delegates based on the results of today's caucus. the primary on feb 19 will not make a lick of difference as far as the democratic nomination is concerned. for the first time in a very long time, what happens in washington state will actually make a difference in the nomination process.
perhaps you would like to watch a video about what happens when people go a-caucusing. the nice people at the obama campaign put together this adorable video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mxESw0lY0CE
if you still haven't decided which democrat is the most huggable, i encourage you to spend some time with barack. his speech about religion that r posted a few weeks ago is an excellent one, if a bit on the long side at 30 minutes or so: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid353515028?bctid=416343938
here is a shorter one from the new hampshire primary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe751kMBwms&NR=1
no matter which way you swing, get up off your hungover butt and go meet your neighbors at your caucus. it will make me proud. here's how to find out where your caucus will be located (note that it is not necessarily the same place as your regular polling place): http://wa-democrats.org/
the washington democrats site seems to be getting fairly slammed today so here is another caucus lookup from the obama campaign: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/walookup
happy caucusing!
love, chaya

yarr i am wonder woman! i survived the 3-day not much the worse for wear, all things considered. lots of sore muscles and stiffness, including some muscles i didn't even know i had. a couple of blisters, one cracked foot. today is for laying about and power relaxing.
i don't even really know where to start with the highlights of the weekend; they tell you it's going to be a life-changing experience and maybe you're like me and you're kind of skeptical about that and then you do it and the thing blows your damn mind.
that said, the best part was the kids who came out to cheer us on. on sunday, the last day, we walked up first avenue, and at first and battery i think it was, there was a little girl about 8 years old, giving us high-fives and holding a sign she'd made herself that said "thank you for saving my future." let me tell you, there were no dry eyes passing her by.
we raised 6.4 million dollars for breast cancer research this weekend.
i think i might do it again next year.

hi friends. i've been pretty quiet round these parts lately. mostly because when i'm not working these days, i'm walking. walky walky walk. i'm training for the breast cancer 3-day, which is a 60 mile walk over 3 days. it happens next week. yipe!
i've been updating a training journal of sorts over at my donation page, which brings me to the next thing: if you or someone you know might be interested in contributing to my fundraising goal, or you just want to witness my self-torture, you can do so here: http://www.the3day.org/seattle07/chaya - feel free to distribute far and wide. i'm really close to reaching my goal but i'm hoping to beat it.
ps: last week was 6 months since i quit smoking. because i am awesome.

on my way out to the theatre for the second night of show. last night's show was AMAZING, so if you needed prodding to get your ass out there, consider this your early warning. leo pulled off some incredible video to go along with the second act, and luara sings like a dreamy dreamboat, and the dancers are very lovely and talented, and everyone's costumes stayed on and in one piece.
the show is at seven tonight, doors will open at 6:30 or so.
( here's the show info again if you need it and SERIOUSLY I MEAN IT YOU SHOULD COME )

hi friends. some of you know i've been hiding under a rock busting out some costumes for a dance performance this weekend. now the rest of you know too! the costumes look incredible; i'm putting the finishing touches on everything this afternoon. i hope to see some of you at the show - i'll be at both the saturday and sunday performances and if you are dying to meet my parents they're coming to the saturday show.

right, so. i'm really really really tired of winter. really. today it hailed like fuck in seattle and was generally cold and dismal and wet and i hate it i hate it. i am ready for springtime and warmness and short sleeves and barbecues and gardening.
so i got a miniature greenhouse today to put on our porch for seed starting. it looks much like this one, in fact i think it is that one, minus the baby. i had to drink some beer while i put it together. and then i had to drink some beer while i planted some seeds.
drunk gardening is #1. we now have 2 flats of seeds started, the first round of the season. currently growing in my baby-free greenhouse: peppermint, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, beets, broccoli, swiss chard, and 2 kinds of sugar snap peas.
next round will include cilantro, carrots, leeks, thai basil, shiso, scallions, thai peppers, more beets, more lettuce, more swiss chard and probably a couple of other things that i am forgetting because of the beer.
you can come over to my house and i will feed you vegetables. first i will grow them though.
YAY

we got a new stove/oven today. it is pretty and blindingly white. i forgot what the inside of a clean oven looks like. it looks like CLEAN. thank you dave's appliance rebuild!
our old oven tried to burst into flames when i was making cookies this weekend. i had only just barely finished the mixing part and was about to start dropping dough onto cookie sheets when FWOOMP the oven element exploded and tried to eat me. fortunately cid and eric came to the rescue and let me bake cookies at their house. the cookies were good. they are pretty much gone now.
tomorrow is r9's birthday and i will celebrate the day of his birth and also the delivery of our new oven by baking cupcakes for to bring to the robo.trashes. so you should come, and eat cupcakes. everyone likes cupcakes.

i would like to say that i am having a nonstop raging kegger while r9 is off visiting grad schools in socal but instead i am doing some very mundane things. want to hear about it? okay good!
this morning i started some dinner cooking in the crockpot. we are having italian peppers (some from mom's garden) with mushrooms, onions, and assorted sausages over egg noodles. we are having this all week because there is a seriously large amount of food in that thing.
i went to vain to pick up some hair dye because i was having the fadey fadey action and they are no longer carrying my color, or any of the clairol colors. emergency emergency! so i had to pick something else and it is supposedly a little more fire enginey than the last color, according to their retarded little fake hair swatches. all i can really tell you right now is that it is more burninating than my old color. OW MY SCALP IS FALLING OFF.
also i went to the yarn store because i needed a new project. the last project i was working on was a cute cute a-line skirt on some size 7 or 8 needles and i cast on like 250 stitches and knitted 12 rows (that's 3000 stitches for those of you playing at home) and then i discovered that i had knitted a mobius strip. so i am not going to work on that project for a little while until i'm not mad at it anymore. i got some fuzzy orange and red yarn for a scarf and some nice mohair in red and brown for a second attempt at a different skirt in bigger yarn that won't take me a thousand million years.
YARGH I'M A PIRATE
see wasn't that fun?

school will be over tomorrow, final critique is 4:30 to 6:30. then i will come out of my school cave and hang out with all of you people i've been neglecting in favor of the academic art world. i'm taking next quarter off, too, so that means that all the people i've promised projects to (HI ARIEL, HI JOE, HI RANDY) will not have to wait a million years.
let's hang out and drink on friday, ok? randy has a show at the lower level. i'll be there getting my caro on.

OW MY HEAD. got a little sloppy last night at the FREE TECHNO PARTY. i'm not as hungover as i should be for as much drankin as i did, but the good news is i'm in the perfect state of mind for working on my school project all day today, which involves cutting about a million circles out of fluted polypropylene with an x-acto knife. so much circle cutting.

so, the university has this immunization requirement for measles/mumps/rubella. i went through a bunch of bs back in 1992 getting them to acknowledge that i'd been immunized already and didn't need to be again. fine, right? except for the part where they lost these records for me and now i don't have them anymore and have to start all over again because they've placed a hold on my registration until i can prove that i'm not going to get measles. poop.
so i just got my first of two mmr shots today. now i feel kind of odd, which is either due to the shot or the slight hangover or both.
the bad news from my campus day: there are no entry codes for the class i was hoping to get into. i have to meet with an art advisor next week and kiss ass for entry codes for one of two other classes i can take this fall. extra bad news: it's hard to find alternate bullshit classes that will fit with my work schedule in case this goes horribly awry. poop.
numbers tonight! also beer! yay.
update: i think i've decided on HISTORY OF CANADA for my alternate class in case i can't get into any of my art thingers. everyone loves canada!

i came down with some sort of assy achey fevery flu about an hour after leaving work yesterday. totally weak. i promptly fell into bed and slept for approximately 18 hours, with a few short breaks for tom ka gai and cribbage and later, a theraflu party in the bed. feeling much better today, though pretty out of it from sleeping for so long.
work continues to go really well, if overwhelming at times. (so much to know!) there are a couple of obscenely cute kittens up for adoption right now and i am having a really hard time restraining myself from putting them in my pockets and taking them home. the little girl kitty sleeps right on top of the boy kitty's head and aghrlsrefnblgfh so cute. seriously. SO CUTE.

3:46 pm - a few things i have learned this week:
|
lesson 1: having days off in the middle of the week gives me a really distorted sense of what day it is.
lesson 2: before i started work, i was really looking forward to being that mysterious girl on the bus wearing scrubs. i always wondered where those mysterious scrubs-wearers were going to or coming from. i have since learned that it is not necessarily so pleasant to actually BE a scrubs-wearer, as i spent 15 minutes waiting for the bus across the street from the hospital where i was subjected to a lengthy discourse from a homeless woman with two (obscenely cute) puppies about how the social security office is trying to poison her dogs by giving them water while she's in the office picking up fraudulent checks from kansas and her dogs are in training to take care of her when she gets old and WHAT IS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO OMFG. i told her to go to the emergency vet on lake city way. her dogs looked fine, though they were obviously hungry and trying to eat cigarette butts at the bus stop. she was wearing a tiara over this weird head scarf and kept clutching at her abdomen while she went on about her various conspiracy theories. when i escaped to what i thought was the relative safety of the bus, this guy with tattoos all over his hands and gigantic holes in his ears and greasy dreadlocks talked to me about how my hospital had turned him down for hire several times over. well no shit buddy, you are totally not presentable to 80% of our client base.
lesson 3: when waiting for a bus downtown, wearing scrubs, one should be prepared to get a lot of dirty looks if one should be so bold as to light up a cigarette.
i'm tired a lot and my feet hurt, but the new job is aces and everyone is so very nice. also, puppies and kittens! +++
